Havant Cricket Club – Safeguarding Children

Havant Cricket Club is committed to ensuring all children (all persons under the age of 18) participating in cricket have a safe, positive and fun experience, whatever their level of involvement.

HCC will do this by:

  • Recognising all children participating in cricket (regardless of age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, ability or disability) have the right to have fun and be protected from harm in a safe environment.
  • Ensuring the welfare of all children is paramount.
  • Ensuring individuals working within cricket at, or for, our Club provide a welcoming, safe, and fun experience for children.
  • Providing an environment where the views of children, parents and volunteers are sought and welcomed, and where people have the opportunity to voice any concerns to the Club Safeguarding Officer.
  • Adopting and implementing the ECB “Safe Hands – Cricket’s Policy for Safeguarding Children”.
  • Ensuring all individuals working within cricket at the Club are recruited in accordance with ECB guidelines, including enhanced DBS and Barred List vetting checks.
  • Ensuring all suspicions, concerns and allegations are taken seriously and dealt with swiftly and appropriately.
  • Ensuring access to confidential information relating to child safeguarding matters is restricted to those who need to know, including the Club Safeguarding Officer and appropriate external authorities such as the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO).

Havant Cricket Club – Safeguarding Children with Disabilities

HCC are committed to ensuring cricket is open and accessible to all members of the community and that everyone is supported to achieve their potential in any capacity, whether as a player, employee, volunteer, coach or official. This principle applies regardless of age, race, disability, ability, gender, religion or belief, sexual orientation or background.

Children with disabilities should enjoy cricket in a safe environment. HCC will ensure disabled children, and children with special needs and autistic spectrum disorders, are welcomed into the Club. Once HCC have been informed of a child’s disability the appropriate officers/volunteers will discuss with each child and their parent/guardian what support is needed.

HCC recognises that children with disabilities may be especially vulnerable. Key commitments include:

  • Ensuring children with disabilities can participate fully and safely in all club activities.
  • Recognising that disabled children may face additional barriers to reporting abuse or concerns.
  • Providing appropriate support and reasonable adjustments for all children with disabilities.
  • Ensuring all staff and volunteers understand the particular vulnerability of disabled children and the risk of assumptions such as “it couldn’t happen here.”
  • Treating all disclosures seriously regardless of the child’s communication ability.

If you have a concern about the welfare of a child with a disability, please contact our Safeguarding Officer, Selina Jones, at selinajones05@hotmail.co.uk or 07801 530995.

Havant Cricket Club – Safeguarding Adults

Havant Cricket Club is committed to creating and maintaining a safe and positive environment and accepts our responsibility to safeguard adults at risk involved in all levels of cricket in England & Wales in accordance with legislation.

Safeguarding means protecting an adult’s right to live safely, free from abuse and neglect. Legislation in England and Wales defines an ‘Adult at Risk’ as any person aged 18 or over who has care and support needs, who is experiencing (or is at risk of) abuse or neglect, and as a result is unable to protect themselves.

This policy applies to all individuals involved in cricket at HCC. Key commitments:

  • Recognising that any adult can be at risk given the right circumstances.
  • Creating an environment where concerns can be raised openly and safely.
  • Ensuring everyone involved in cricket understands their responsibility to safeguard adults at risk.
  • Acting swiftly and appropriately on any concern raised about an adult’s welfare.
  • Working in line with ECB guidance and relevant legislation including the Care Act 2014.

If you have a concern about an adult at risk, please contact our Safeguarding Officer, Selina Jones, at selinajones05@hotmail.co.uk.

Havant Cricket Club – Responding to, Recording and Reporting Concerns

The HCC policy is to follow the ECB Child Safeguarding procedure. The expectation is simple: if you have a concern, you must share it. Taking no action may leave a child or children at risk of harm, and is not an option.

There are three steps involved in taking appropriate action: Respond – Record – Report

Step 1: Respond

Anyone responding to disclosure, suspicions and/or allegations must:

  • Stay calm; do not show disgust or disbelief.
  • Ensure the child is safe and feels safe.
  • Listen carefully to what is said; ask questions only to clarify — avoid leading questions.
  • Keep an open mind; do not make assumptions or judgements.
  • Reassure the child and stress that they are not to blame.
  • Be honest: explain you will have to tell someone else to help protect them. Do not promise to keep secrets.
  • Maintain confidentiality — only share what is necessary to protect the child.

Step 2: Record

Make a detailed record as soon as possible, including: the child’s full name, age/date of birth and address; a clear summary of the incident or concern; a distinction between fact, opinion and hearsay; any visible injuries; the child’s own words where possible; details of any alleged person; witnesses; actions taken; and a signature, date and time.

Step 3: Report

Share your concern with the HCC Club Safeguarding Officer: Selina Jonesselinajones05@hotmail.co.uk.

If the Club Safeguarding Officer is unavailable or the concern relates to them, contact the County Safeguarding Officer: John Cook — 07766 838779 / john.cook@utilitabowl.com.

If that is not possible, contact the ECB Safeguarding Team: safeguarding@ecb.co.uk.

If you believe a child may be in immediate danger or a crime may have been committed — call 999 first.
